The U.S. Is Back in the Paris Agreement. Global greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced by 50% within the next decade, down to zero in less than 30 years, based on the Paris Climate Agreement (signed by 196 countries).

We need the proper hydrogen storage and delivery infrastructure for a sustainable energy system, providing non-polluting energy with zero greenhouse emissions.

The biggest hurdles for the transition to hydrogen as a clean energy carrier are the high costs of its storage and transportation and the risk of dangerous leakage and combustion.

The high-pressure hydrogen containers (~700 brs) are very expensive, and dedicated pipelines are very rare around the world for the same reason.

One possibility to rapidly expand the hydrogen delivery infrastructure is to adapt the natural gas delivery infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen. Since these pipelines aren’t built for hydrogen, the current idea is to mix hydrogen with natural gas. Several projects worldwide are demonstrating blends with hydrogen concentrations as high as 20%, but there are safety and serious technical concerns to overcome:

Hydrogen atoms can make steel more brittle, eventually risking ruptures and explosions
Hydrogen permeation and leaks. Due to its small molecular size, hydrogen can easily pass through materials. For example, hydrogen leakage from a car tank in a garage could create the conditions for an explosion
